The Mariner's Compass is considered one of the most difficult piecing projects in quilting.  When featured inside of the Broken Star pattern, it is slightly less complex but none the less challenging.  Quilts on white backgrounds are not accomplished in our Old-Order Amish community, so this quilt is coming from the Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  It uses the typical calico prints commonly seen in the Lancaster market, mixed with solids and arranged artistically to define the angles of the design.  The quilting is especially gorgeous in this particular quilt, using the feathered circle and a narrow rope in the white background, it really stands out.
