Plain & Simple Quilts
Amish-Made Appliqué Quilts
There is a distinct difference between 'Amish Quilts' and 'Amish-made Quilts'.
Amish Quilts are those made for their own use in their homes and are governed by age old traditions regarding colors (must be dark solids, no pastels, prints, stripes, checks, etc.). This approach to "Amish Quilts" covers two fundamental life philosophies of the Amish: nothing fancy and everything practical. Quite simply said, plain, dark colored quilts are low maintenance; they don't show dirt readily so they aren't always in the laundry. Dirt is perhaps the one constant on an Amish farm, brought into the house on shoes and clothing, and being carried on the breeze through open windows in fair weather.
Amish-made quilts are those made by Amish women for the marketplace, for sale to non-Amish customers. These quilts are not bound by restrictions on colors, designs, or practicality. As with all craftsman trying to make a living at their art, they have to create items that are well-received by the general public: fancy, colorful, delicate, merchandise intended to enhance a decor and not governed by serviceability.Unless otherwise indicated, all Appliqués are on quality, ivory-colored muslin with scalloped edges.
The Appliqué Quilts presented on this page are one of a kind. We are marking those that have previously sold to help in making your selection. If you have found the perfect Appliqué Quilt for your purposes, but the "sold sign" is displayed with that item, we can acquire a similar quilt in your color and size requirements. Custom Appliqué quilts typically take a four to six week turn around time.
